Michael Bourke was born in Sydney in 1971. He spent his childhood growing up. For a while, he toyed with the idea of becoming a world-famous rock and roll star or a postman. With no musical talent and a tendency to fall off his bike, Michael was forced to stay at school for a very long time.
After thirty years of marsupial-free living, Michael moved to Mudgee and immediately made friends with a number of kangaroos. When not majestically bounding through the swaying grass, Michael attempts to reimagine the world on small rectangles of canvas.
“There is an enormous chasm between the hope that is required for living, and the inevitability of sadness and loss. I would love to paint all over that space, but I can’t. So instead, I just paint on these little canvas oblongs. It seems to help.”
